American War of 1898. It remained under the control of a U.S. military government from 1898 until 1902, when a constitution was adopted and the sovereign Republic of Cuba was established. The map originally appeared in 1898 as Rand McNally's New Business Atlas Map of Cuba. American companies invested heavily in Cuba after 1898 and came to dominate the economy of the country until the revolution of 1959 led by Fidel Castro.
