Map Description
Old map of Atlantic Coast, North America.

Created by Joseph F. W. (Joseph Frederick Wallet) Des Barres in 1780.
  • Charts dated 1777 to 1780.
  • Consists of the St. Lawrence and New York sections of the Atlantic Neptune, which in early "editions" formed b. 4, in 2 unnumbered pts., of the four series of charts. Each section has its own special t.p., but the general t.p. is wanting, probably indicating that this copy was sold separately.
  • Presumably both sectional title pages in this copy were dated 1780, but the title of the St. Lawrence section is mutilated and the date has disappeared. The St. Lawrence title is without the reference to Lord Howe.
  • The tables of contents for each section, without heading or numbering, are engraved on separate narrow leaves mounted on a full sheet. Each item is followed by the price in shillings. Beneath the engr. St. Lawrence contents is a manuscript list duplicating both engr. lists, with 3 charts and a plate of views added.
  • Cf. H. N. Stevens. Catalogue of the Henry Newton Stevens collection of the Atlantic Neptune.
